Every true fanatic for wines will realize the ecstasy of preparing their own wine at home and savoring it. You may think wine making at home is difficult, but you will be happy to know that it isn’t and is quite easy. Initially you will need to know the steps involved in making wine in a domestic setting and then you can use them to make your own wine.
In order to make wine at home you will need either grape concentrate or grapes. Grow some grapes if you have a piece of land and use them whenever you make your wine. If you are using grape concentrate, nothing but the best quality will do. You can get such high quality concentrate online and in domestic supply stores. Now you will have to get home brewing equipment and some yeast. For first time wine makers, investing in a wine kit is a much better idea than getting all the things one by one. Do not buy individual wine making equipment for making large batches of wine until you have made certain that your wine has brewed well and you really want to continue doing this.
The number of steps in wine making can be anywhere from five to eight - this depends on what you are using to begin with, actual grapes or their concentrate. If using grapes, you will need to begin by harvesting them. Do not leave behind any stem fragments on the grapes - remove them carefully. The bitter tannins present in stems can give a very unwanted taste to the wine so you have to make sure you remove each of them meticulously.
With the stems removed, you will now have to puncture the skins of the grapes in order to extricate their juices. There are numerous ways to perform this. Most wine makers prefer the crushing method. The amount to which you crush the grapes will influence the taste of the wine. Well they practically leave the berries wholly intact so wine makers who want to keep a fruity flavor for their wines will as good as not touch the berries at all.
The step following this is known as primary fermentation. During this process, the yeast will act on the sugar and ferment it. This will convert the sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide then in some cases, more yeast will be needed. If you depend only on the yeast present in the grapes, your conversion won’t be continuous so you will need additional yeast.
Now, you have to squeeze more juice from the grapes. You have completed the step of primary fermentation, but now you can remove more juice from the fruit. It should be noted that the juice that is extracted in this step is typically not as high of a quality as the juice that is extracted during the crushing phase. When you crushed the grapes for the first time, the juice flowed freely without touching the stems/skins and that is the reason the juice from the second crushing is bitterer. But the press juice is not worthless. Large wineries make use of this press juice so that they can increase their total yield.
There is a second fermentation after this pressing process, which is concurrent with the aging process of the wine. You can decide how long you want your wine to be fermented.
The final stage of wine making is bottling. Add wine directly to the bottles and then add some sulfites as this will stop the fermentation process and help to keep the wine preserved. Seal the bottle with an appropriate cork when all this has been completed.
